Getting quality sleep is easier said than done, especially with the hectic lifestyles that people lead nowadays. But that doesn’t take away the fact that getting proper rest enables us to deal with daily challenges better. Getting a good eight hours of sleep makes a person feel energised and better equipped to deal with whatever the day holds. But, you are not able to do that if you are unable to get the right amount of sleep. Luckily, there is a way to solve this predicament.

Maintain a Schedule

If you can do just one thing to improve your sleep, set a schedule, and even more importantly, stick to it. This includes going to sleep on time and waking up on time the next morning, no matter what. The reason for this is that having a regular routine enables you to keep your biological clock on track, which in turn enables you to get a better night’s sleep. Also, regular exposure to both light and dark helps keep your biological clock in sync as well.

Keep a Sleep Diary

To give yourself a better idea of which habits affect your sleep patterns, it is advised that you write down everything that’s sleep related such as what time you went to bed and got up in the morning, or how long it takes for you to go to sleep at night. That’s not all that needs to go in your diary. Also include what you eat before bed, how many times you wake up during the night, and how much you exercise. These are all important questions which need to be answered if you want to get to the bottom of how your sleep pattern in affected. Comparing the information you gather with your daily activities will give you a better idea of where you need to make changes to improve your sleep.

Quit Smoking

Cigarettes contain nicotine, which is a stimulant and prevents you from getting to sleep, especially when you smoke just before bed. As well as that, it isn’t unheard of for smokers to experience withdrawal effects, especially during the night. Smokers are also more likely to feel less rested even after a good night’s sleep compared to non-smokers.

Take a Look at Your Medication

A lot of people may not know that the use of beta blockers prescribed for high blood pressure can also in some cases cause insomnia, or restlessness during the night. If you want to get a good sleep at night, you will need to make a list of all the medication and supplements you are taking and then have your doctor review and evaluate them and find out whether they are affecting your sleep cycle.
